Our Story

How five practitioners, one coaching course and a lot of volunteers built Uganda's national Kho Kho association.

Participants, trainers and guests at a Kho Kho Uganda coaching course

Kho Kho reached Uganda in 2020, when five Ugandans travelled to New Delhi on invitation from the Khokho Federation of India for an international coaching and development course: Nsubuga Mustapha (team leader), Ephraim Makubuya, Oroma Sharon, Lumala Reagan and Nnakacwa Ramla. They came home to introduce a sport that few Ugandans knew.

The first national coaching course was held in Butambala District in November 2021. At that point Uganda had no Kho Kho clubs, certified coaches, trained referees, organised competitions or governance structures. In 2022 the pioneers began consultations on a national federation, and the association has worked as Kho Kho Uganda since.

Between November 2021 and June 2026 the outreach programme reached 92 districts and cities in the Central, Eastern, Northern and Western regions, with coaching courses, officiating clinics, school visits and leadership workshops. From February to June 2026 a nationwide campaign formed and strengthened community clubs.

The strategic plan for 2025/26 to 2029/30 sets out what comes next: stronger governance, more young people playing, a pathway for athletes to national and international level, well-trained coaches and referees, and the partnerships and facilities the sport needs.
